Do you remember Dr. Howard
Kelly story from Johns Hopkins University?
Sometime in the late 1800’s a college student who was selling goods door-to-door in order to pay his school fees was very hungry and decided he would ask for some meal at the next house.
However, when a lovely lady opened the door, he lost his nerve and asked for a drink of water instead. She thought he looked hungry and so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly and then asked, "How much do I owe you?" The lady replied "You don’t owe anything. Mother taught us never to accept pay for a kindness". Many years later that young woman became critically ill and local doctors were baffled. They finally decided to send her to the big city, where they called in specialist to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall to see her. Dr. Kelly recognized the lady. He went back to the consultation room to do his best to save her life from illness. From that day on, he gave full attention to the case. After a long struggle, that lady's hospital bill rose up. The lady worried on how to pay the bills for she knew that the medications and treatments are expensive. Dr. Kelly requested her bill for a final approval. He looked at it and wrote something on the bottom and the bill was sent to her room. The girl feared to look at it again, for she was very sure that it would take a whole life to pay for it. Finally, when she glanced at the paper, something written at the bottom of the bill caught her attention. It was stated “Paid in full with one glass of milk.”
